Over 70% of the game of golf is played less than a hundred yards from the hole. Women golfers can especially benefit by approaching their golf game from this perspective because it takes a long time to build up enough upper body strength to develop a longer drive. That said, how many times have you added shots to your score on the green due to three- and four-putts?

State of Mind

One of the most important things for women golfers to realize about putting, and about golf in general, is that although it is not as easy as it looks, negative thinking will kill you every time. Walking into a putt with freight-train brain, trying to remember whether or not you shut the refrigerator door or if you paid the cable bill on time is the best way to miss a shot that you have the ability to make.

Golf experts emphasize the value of quieting your mind while putting. Rather than vigorously trying to push intrusive thoughts away, simply acknowledge them, and make a conscious decision to instead pay attention to your intention of making this putt. Confidence and a positive frame of mind make up at least 50% of the battle.


The key is finding your natural, comfortable body rhythm. It’s different for everyone but easier for women golfers. Dave Pelz, in his book 10 Minutes a Day to Better Putting, suggests that you only need the following items to find the natural swing that will suit you for the rest of your life:

Two pillows set up on the floor approximately 18 inches apart.
A metronome.
Your putter.

Start the metronome on 90 beats per minute and shut your eyes. Swing your putter in time with the metronome, tapping the pillows in turn. Keep slowing down the speed of the metronome until you find the most comfortable rhythm for you. The importance of shutting your eyes cannot be stressed enough. Perfect putting is not about what looks right, but what feels right. If you are watching the putter’s movement, you are paying attention to what your head says, and putting is where it is most important to pay attention to your body’s voice.

Stroke Mechanics

Keep it simple! The two most important factors to a great putt are stability and squareness.


Two main schools of thought come to the forefront about how exactly the putter should be held. The first, and most common, is that the grip should lie solidly on the lifeline of the palm. The second suggests that the grip should be controlled mainly by the fingers which allows for more detailed control of the putter head.

Remember, putting is mostly about what feels right, and you will be the best judge of this for yourself. A stable grip does not come from a tight grip; it’s quite the opposite actually. As time goes on, you will be able to feel the happy medium of firm-but-not-too-firm.


The mechanics of squareness are two-fold: The body and the head. That is, your body and the putter’s head. First, it is important to position the line of your body (from the middle of your forehead all the way down to the center point between your feet) at a right angle to the line of your shot. Next, the head of the putter should be aligned in the same manner.

Here is the most common thing missed by women golfers: the head of the putter needs to remain completely square all the way through the stroke! The way to make this happen is to focus on your immediate realm of control, which is maintaining squared hands and forearms all the way through.


The old axiom “Practice Makes Perfect” does not apply here. Practice does, however, make exponentially better! As Dr. Bob Rotella so aptly states, Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect. Here are some practice ideas:

Putt toward a distance marker rather than a hole. There is something much less intimidating about knowing there’s no hole to miss.

Important note: pros only make approximately 50% of their 6-foot putts. Putting from longer distances only sets you up for an ego bruising. Start small, around 2 feet, and gradually move outward.

Look at the ball and the head of your putter, not the hole – it’s not going anywhere! The only things you can control have to do with your body and your mind. Once you’ve determined the square line to the hole, no peeking! Consciously think about a maintaining that squareness all the way through a straight shot, using the rhythm of your own body. Women golfers definitely have an advantage here.

Never leave a putting practice session on a miss! Even if you have to force yourself to keep putting until you make it, and then have to resort to a humiliating distance of only six inches, your final visual of the session will be the ball rolling cleanly into the hole.

Feel resentful at men when their drives are so much longer than yours? So do I! Work on developing your putting skills and it’ll soon be payback time when you reach the green!

Handicap Chipping Away

What is a chip? It is when you are close enough to the green that you don’t need to pitch the ball, but far enough away that you can’t putt it. Practicing frequently to develop feel and adhering to some basic fundamentals such as a firm left wrist and using your shoulders to do the work will get you a step closer to becoming a chipping guru.

Using the loft of the club is crucial in understanding the chipping stroke. The loft angle of a club is what makes the ball get airborne. A golfer’s hands must be slightly forward of the ball (leaning towards the target) at impact in order for the loft of the club to do its job. Think of it as pinching the ball with the club to make it go up in the air. This is the same position the hands should be in when executing a chip shot.

To achieve maximum control, make the club shorter by gripping down on the club you choose to chip with. Try a 9 iron to begin with. Set the head behind the ball aiming straight down your target line. Set up with your feet around 6 inches apart and aim slightly left of the target line. Aiming your feet left of the target line will allow your shoulders to swing more freely during the stroke. Go ahead and set your hands ahead of the ball at address, so you can get the feel of where they should be at impact.

Concentrate on keeping the wrists firm and swinging the shoulders in a pendulum like motion to begin the stroke. Start the downswing by accelerating the club through the ball in a pinching motion, and finish with the back of your left wrist facing the target line. Try this without a ball first, and focus on brushing the grass. Then place a ball down and make the same motion. The ball should make a clicking sound off the face, jump in the air, and beginning rolling towards the target end over end. Imagine keeping the triangle that your arms and shoulders create in tact throughout the stroke, as a mental image. You can also think of the chip shot as a putt with loft. Use the same stroke you would use when putting and see what happens.

Unless practiced, these guidelines will do no good. Feel can only be developed through trial and error. Use different clubs and different length swings to see which combination works best for you. Once you have practiced chipping under these circumstances, you will begin to feel more comfortable with a wider variety of situations on the course.

A flub or a scull is usually the result when golfers try to help the ball in the air by allowing the wrists to break down before impact and scoop at the ball. The loft of the club is rendered useless when this happens, and the consequences are very frustrating. So, use the fundamentals you have learned and practice them until they are second nature. Your scores will fall and your creativity will blossom.

Golf Swing Basic Tips to Improve

Golf as a sport has gained prominence all over the world. Women golfers have carved a niche in the sporting world with players like Annika Sorenstam , Emily Bastel, Violeta Retamoza, Allison Fouch and many others, who have made a name for themselves. The basic requirement of being the best woman golfer is having the perfect swing. Once you have been able to master that art, the other most important aspect of your game is your short game. So, how do you get that perfect swing?

Your arms should be flexible and for a powerful stroke you require dynamic movement. Get a good golf workout regimen for you to develop better muscles for the strong backswing and downswing. When your body has the strength and the flexibility, you can actually get your arms in motion. Look at Annika Sorenstam, who was able to achieve her position because she worked out extensively along with her golf practice. The next step would be to see how you grip the club. Your arms and grip are interconnected and poor arm coordination can make your grip difficult. Many women golfers do not realize that a poor grip also affects the set up of your arms! So, proper grip with right arm set up is important to land the ball on the greens and not slice it.


Practice following these basic tips to learn your swing:

The right arm set up is to hold your hands together as if holding a club- right hand should be below the left.
You will see that in this position, your arms are relaxed and bow out at the elbows.
Your posture and grip will affect the height and the direction of the ball.
To improve your golf swing, concentrate on the target that you are going to hit.
This improves your concentration and accuracy.
Take a few practice swings before you actually hit the ball, so that you are comfortable with the grip and your posture.
Your knees should be slightly bent and weight balanced on the balls of the feet.
Your hands on the head of the club should be flat, for a smooth ball take off and a flawless drive.

Women golfers need to imagine a swing plane before a hit so that the target is achieved. A swing plane is the imaginary dotted line that is drawn from the ball up the club and to your grip. As you start the swing, the line moves along with your arm movement. However, high handicap women golfers may have a problem converting the concept to reality, but once you get the hang of this, you will be able to judge how straight, high and far you will be able to hit the ball.

Grip Fundamentals

How you hold your club is all-important to your golf game. Your grip controls the height, distance, and direction of your shots. Your grip should be the same with all of your clubs except your putter. Beginning women golfers should learn their grip with a seven iron.

Although there are several different types of grips, the same fundamental principles apply to them all – your hands must fit together in order to work together in the swing. Whether you are a right-handed or a left-handed golfer – you should work towards applying equal pressure from both hands. Otherwise, your hands tend to fight one another taking the stability out of your swing.

The pressure you apply should not create tension in the forearms. You need the flexibility in your arms so that they can swing the club with control and speed. Too much tension in the hands and arms restricts them from getting in position to hit the ball with power. A lighter grip enhances your wrist hinge – a vital power source in the swing. This light pressure – and here we women golfers have an advantage – also increases the amount of clubface rotation, improving your chance of squaring the club at impact.

A good guideline is to think of pressure on a scale of 1 to 10. The pressure of your grip should be around 4 to a 5 – comparable to holding a baby bird in your hand.

The basics of getting to grip with your clubs

Getting to grips with your clubs as explained above are the fundamentals of your swing affecting a great deal of your game. Follow these eight steps to perfect the basic grip. Now these are not automatic on the first one, two or even third try – you will be thinking them through. However, if you try them repeatedly – you will start to feel when your grip is correct. This will then become part of your automatic game – one part you eventually do not have to think about.

My suggestion is to take yourself off to a driving range and practice over and over getting to grips with your club. As advised, for beginning women golfers, start off with a seven iron and once you feel your grip is consistently correct, then move on to practicing with your other irons. Remember the grip for your putter is different and we shall explain those basics in another part of this section.

The correct pressure, combined with the proper placement of your hands on the handle, gives you the greatest chance to produce longer straighter shots.
